21st Dorset Closed Chess Championship (2014)
(posted by Ian Clark 6 Feb '14)
The Dorset Championship was held at the Wessex Hotel from 31st Jan to 2nd Feb 2014. The entry was disappointing at only 31 – easily the lowest ever. The Championship section only had 7 players with 12 in other 2 sections.
The Championship was still an exciting competition with Ian Clark winning the trophy on tie break from Andrew Grzybicki and achieving his first Dorset Championship. Ian had managed to beat Andrew in the first round then beat Bruce Jenks, had a bye in the third round and drew with Martin Simons in the 4th round. In the last round Ian was playing Stephen Appleby with black ( his 3rd black in 4 games ! ) and Andrew who was also now on 3/4 was playing Martin. Ian tried to play a safe line but this did not work and was very close to losing but with a bit of luck managed to hold on for the draw by which time Andrew had drawn with Martin when it looked like he was going to win after being Queen up for 2 pieces.
In the Major, Peter Wilcock won with 4 points from Steve Pollyn on 3.5. Peter drew in the last round with Colin Grant to secure the trophy.
In the Minor, David Burt won with 4 points and also won the Veterans trophy. Sid Jones and Colin Wilson were joint second on 3.5.
I would like to thank Graham White for being controller and sorting out quite a few problems with byes and withdrawals not helping. The tournament was held in a nice quiet room until the fire alarm went off twice early in the 4th round!
